Root Help
My friend just got a thunderbolt and tried that 3 step process it told him it was rooted and then erased everything on phone ... How did you guys do it!? Please feel free to email me a link at jets9910@gmail.com

Welcome!
Wiping all data is normal for the rooting process. In order to root, you actually have to downgrade to an older RUU before updating to a newer ROM.
If he has S-OFF, and root-access works (i.e., you can get write access to /system via Root Explorer or other file manager, Titanium Backup works, etc.) then he has nothing to worry about. It's rooted and he can enjoy all of the fruits of the TB development scene. MIUI isn't ready for the Thunderbolt yet, but there's a full list of available ROMs here that he can choose from.
If he doesn't have S-OFF he needs to follow the instructions exactly as they're written in the permaroot thread here.

rooting method
I used revolutionary method. I lost no data. Before rooting I was on stock Verizon gb with the latest radio. Their website has a guide for rooting which is what I used.
