[GUIDE] Guide to flash/upgrade MIUI while minimizing USER ERRORS -FC's, reboots, etc
With the recent update to MIUI for EVO fixing the random reboots, there really shouldn't be any issues holding anyone back from this beautiful ROM

FRESH install guide - coming from a different ROM? your current MIUI setup laggy and you want to start fresh? Follow these steps.
1. Boot into recovery
2. Flash this file:
Calkulin's Format_All.zip or this one if you are using CWM recovery Edify_Format_All.zip by jamsterzak. It will wipe everything for you including /system, which normal data wipes skip. (they only wipe /data and /cache)
3. Flash latest build of MIUI in SAME RECOVERY SESSION - do not reboot after flashing the format_all.zip
4. Reboot
5. If using titanium backup to restore settings/apps, DO NOT restore system settings - only apps and app data.
Honestly, with proper wipes coming from a different ROM, you should not have the lingering issues that have been mentioned daily here, including launcher fc's, wifi, gps, etc.
The following is for those that flash weekly MIUI builds on top of each other wiping only cache and dalvik cache. If you are running into issues, please follow this guide to minimize USER errors that are not a result of the ROM itself.
Those that only wipe /cache and /dalvik-cache before updating MIUI usually do this because they do not want to deal with "setting everything up again."
Take 10 minutes of your time and follow these steps to have a nice FRESH flash of MIUI with all your desktop layouts/sms/etc. restored.
1. Open MIUI Backup on your current setup.
2. It will bring you to the "System" tab - select Backup on the bottom of your screen
3. Hit "Select All" or manually check all options (or pick and choose..) here - UNCHECK CONTACTS if you sync your contacts via google account, backing up/restoring will cause force closes
4. Start backup
5. Now go back to MIUI backup and go to the "Apps" tab
6. Select Backup here
7. Check all your apps you want to backup
(NOTE: This is a good chance to see all the apps you installed throughout the days/weeks you have kept your setup and skip checking those you don't find yourself using often.. I honestly only use 5~6 apps and have 350+mb free space at all times)
8. Start Backup and let it finish
(There is no need to backup the ROM, we will do this in recovery)
9. Boot into recovery, and do a nandroid backup - in case you aren't happy with what you turn out with
10. Flash this file:
Calkulin's Format_All.zip or this one if you are using CWM recovery Edify_Format_All.zip by jamsterzak. It will wipe everything for you including /system, which normal data wipes skip.
(no need to wipe dalvik-cache, since it is located in /data which the zip above wipes)
11. Flash latest MIUI
12. Boot up, go to MIUI Backup (which is now labeled Backup since 1.1.7) - BEFORE LOGGING INTO MARKET
12b. again, DO NOT LOG INTO MARKET YET
13. Restore apps first
14. Then restore system settings
15. Enjoy an error free rom
I believe the only things you have to set up again are ringtones, and your Google accounts.
There is some cleaning built-in to these ROM zips by stiffspliff, but for those of you who have wipe phobias or OCD, use the links above and I have attached some wiping files here as well. ~justsLast edited by justs; 05-07-2011 at 03:16 PM. Reason: added Edify_FORMAT_ALL

Is it like Monopoly where you are going to sell Stiff the post #2 back at a mark up price?

Awesome! Just what I was looking for.
QUICK QUESTION: When an update pak is included, where would you flash that in these steps. Assuming I'm coming from an earlier version of MIUI
Thanks, glad to be a part of this tribe.Last edited by RyJack2006; 05-13-2011 at 11:46 AM. Reason: forgot a ? LOL

Coming from same version of MIUI: (same as pack)
1-Wipe dalvik and cache
2-Flash Pack
3-Flash any mods, kernels, etc.
4-Reboot to goodness
Coming from previous version of MIUI:
1-Wipe dalvik and cache
2-Flash ROM
3-Flash Pack
4-Flash any mods, kernels, etc.
5-Reboot to goodness
Coming from anything else:
1-Wipe the hell out of everything
2-Flash ROM
3-Flash Pack
4-Flash any mods, kernels, etc.
5-Reboot
6-Give ROM time to settle-in before reporting bugs or worrying about FC's, etc. (at least 2 hours -> 24)
7-Reboot a couple of times during that waiting period and the ROM will work itself out for most things
8-Read the OP and Bugs thread again and check around before posting if you still have bugs
9-Enjoy the goodnessLast edited by justs; 04-30-2011 at 04:06 PM.

after several day trying update 1.5.6 to 1.5.13, and try the calkulin format ALL, etc, my EVO 1.5.13 still unable to booting up...try another ROM all is OK...huft...its really make me curious...here my trial to make 1.5.13 at my phone
calkulin format all and start with 1.5.6 - upgrade to - 1.5.13 [fail]
calkulin format all and start with 1.4.22 - upgrade to 1.4.29 [OK] - upgrade to - 1.5.6 [ok] - upgrade to 1.5.13 [fail]
calkulin format all and start with Fresh EVO 3.5.0.1 [OK] - calkulin format - upgrade to - 1.5.6 - upgrade to - 1.5.13 [fail]
is there any way how to make my evo running 1.5.13? or i just wait to another update and try again...
---------update -----------------
after looking around miuiandroid - i will try the ROM from there - i will update what will going on
--------update------------------
my EVO now can running 1.5.13 - but i run from miuiandroid not from stiff ported...

but i still love this forum

Just flashed 1.6.10 + 1.6.10.1, and noticed the neat little message "formatting dalvik+cache in case you forgot" (not sure if it was there before, never noticed it). Stiff knows to take care of us

On the last 2 versions I've tried I been having trouble with moving applications to my SD card. It says "Failed to move application. There is not enough storage space left", even though my SD card has plenty of space. Anyone else getting these weird problems?

@luvthymetal - YES, me too.
I really want to do a clean install, but I don't want the hassle of doing my custom setup.
Help - anyone??

Sorry in advance for my noob question but I was thinking before I flash Calkulin's Format_All.zip, will it erase my flash?. My evo is flashed to cricket & was thinking if it will change anything with the cricket flash?
