No backgrounds or wallpaper in default messaging app.

Nexus S 4G: OK so I don't know if it's something with my phone or just the themes I'm using, but most of the backgrounds in the default messaging app don't show up at all. I've tried reflashing the ROM several times to fix it, I've tried to fix the permissions, I've used older version of the ROM and tried a bunch of other stuff. Basically the conversation screen that shows the chat bubbles defaults to a white rather than most of the wallpaper or background that are shown in the preview of the theme. Any help? Much appreciated :-)
