Starting from scratch....
I have recently flashed back to froyo 2.2 and also have a fresh root with it. I was running gingerbread 2.3.3 but couldn't root this os on my phone for some reason after many attempts and many application, but to no avail. Froyo works good on my phone, I can root it and correct the lag fix and also overclock the cpu. I am interested in using the MIUI rom but am hesitant; will I loose my root and also will the lag on my phone come back, also; which version of the rom should I start with? Please advise. I have a samsung captivate I897.

I've personally used MIUI on my T959 (Vibrant) and my Inspire 4G, and I love it. Its a fully customizable ROM with root access (just go to Tools folder>Superuser>Menu>Manage Root).
The only problem I've ever gotten from MIUI was with my I897. The back speaker wouldn't work and everyone said I sounded muffled on the phone. I don't know if it was just the phone or the ROM, so I flashed it back to stock for the time being. I'm pretty sure the problem I had was because it was previously owned by my aunt (who can't take care of anything), and the speaker cuts out anyway.
Once you have CWM recovery flashed, you can flash MIUI right away and test out its silky smoothness. Like the homepage says, Miui.us is community supported, so I'm pretty sure someone here can help if you have any problems

Oh, and on your first flash, the ROM gives you little hints on its features as you play around with it. So either of the current versions will suit you just fine
