    Question Apps2sd ext3 partition

Using rom manager, I have partitioned my 16GB SD card, with an EXT3 partition 512mb, a 32mb swap partition and the remainder is FAT32.
I then did a clean install of 1.9.2 and installed all my apps from the market.

    - Do all apps get automatically loaded into the EXT3 partition? including the apps that come with MIUI?
    - If I open settings>Programs tab>Manage Applications>On SD Card I have several apps unchecked, does this mean the apps have NOT been moved into the EXT3 partition?
    - how can I check what apps have been moved into the EXT3 partition?
    - If I install using a backup made with titanium backup or the MIUI backup, will the apps install to the EXT3 partition?

First, I hope your card is class 6 or higher.

If it's so large, I reccomend making the EXT3 partition 1GB, not only 512. Anyway, ROM Manager and ClockworkMod Recovery always format the EXT partition to EXT3 -- even if it's EXT4 and you use ClockworkMod to wipe data etc. the EXT partition is being formatted to EXT3.

There should be no swap, unless you use DATA++. If you've flashed the A2SD version, you should have no swap, and 1GB EXT partition.

Google search for DarkTremmor A2SD and find the specific version for your device. Flash that in Recovery. Reboot -- phone will bootloop 3-4 times, that's normal.

Then search for A2SDGUI in Market. From there, you can manage the A2SD

    --

OOOR, more simple. No need for DarkTremmor A2SD. Search in Market for Terminal Emulator. Install it and open it.

Type su (grant superuser permissions). Then type a2sd reinstall -- once it's done, phone reboots.

Open Terminal again, type in su again. Then type a2sd cachesd -- once it's done, phone reboots.

Re open Terminal, type su... Type a2sd cachesdreset -- phone will reboot.

Re open Terminal... Type a2sd zipalign. Reboot the phone manually.

Install FreeSpace from Market. There you can see the space on your phone & SD card INCLUDING SD-EXT.

    Thanks for your help,

I will repartition my sd card with an EXT3 1GB partition and remove the swap file, ill check first to see if it is class 6 before hand (i dont know what it means exactly but I will google it)

I will then google both the methods you describe and give 1 a shot.

    Always cool to learn more,

    Thanks again

Take the card out of your phone and check its corners... there must be a 2, 4, 6, 10 in a circle. THAT's the class.

Class 6 means the card is capable of up to 6 MB/s writing speed. Class 2 means it's got max 2 MB/s writing speed, which is BAD, since performance won't be great.
Your card should be at least class 4... but having in mind it's of 16GB, it's probably class 6 or higher.

You just format the card using ClockworkMod. Select 1GB EXT, 0 swap... and you're done. You don't have to delete the swap file :P .

By the way... depending on which phone you have, download the latest ClockworkMod Recovery version from here : http://www.clockworkmod.com/recovery_images.html and install it as you want... Or simply head on to blapkmarket.com, register there, then download the full pro version of ROM Manager, through which you can install the latest Clockwork. That is, of course, if you don't already have the pro version.

    bugger... I only have a class 4

I have an 8GB class 4 card that im going to practice with.
I'll use recovery and the system you suggested, i previously used CWM which has a 512mb max size.

I checked the link you send and have the latest pro version installed.

I will try the terminal method you suggested as well.

If all is successful, how do i then put all the apps into the 1GB ext partition?

Once again, Thanks very much for your help, really appreciated.

You don't need a class 6. Class 4 will work just fine. Also you should use dark tremor a2sd. You'll fine less issues with it and your widgets will also function from there as well. A2SDGUI has a lot of bugs. I wouldn't use it. Its better to use terminal as someone already suggested. You don't need any additional programs to verify it worked. All USER apps will automatically be moved there. System apps (native miui apps) are stored in the system rom memory. Check out the attatchment for my titanium back up. You should see your a2sd memory decreasing. Also, I personally don't ever back anything up with miui, or titanium (only data for certain games). Its not necessary unless you just want to store something for later. I always do full wipes when I flash weekly builds and my apps are automatically reloaded every time. Remember - even though they are technically on your sd, they system thinks its reading from internal memory with darktremor. So do not move them to sd as you would with the normal a2sd method. Hope this helps.

EDIT: I don't think my attachment is showing. But basically you should see this in titanium :
    SYSTEM ROM
    INTERNAL
    SD CARD
    SD CARD (a2sd)

With class 4,I have had problems when I moved the cache.I moved back the cache to internal memory and never had a problem. This was all on HTC wildfire.

Class 4 is minimum requirement. I suggest higher class... but class 4 should work fine. I'm just stunned, I mean... 16 GB microSDHC and it's class 4? XD owned

Try the Terminal Emulator thingie, yeah, it's better and easier than DarkTremmor. I mean... flash the DarkTremmor A2SD .zip, but don't use A2SDGUI, stick to Terminal Emulator instead. Then you can check the spaces with FreeSpace (I reccomend that).

Flash the latest ClockworkMod and partition it with that. Otherwise, use Gparted to partition your SD card. 1 GB EXT3 and... the rest FAT32.

    Hi all,

I'm having trouble trying to partition my sd cards. I have an 8GB class 4, and a 16GB class 4.
I have CMW recovery to partition both... selecting a 1GB EXT and a 0mb swap... recovery runs through the partitioning process and tells me that it is done.
My issue is that Titanium backup, Free Space, and the MIUI SD card settings don't see the partition.
All three apps show that a GB is missing ie: my 16GB card has about 15GB available space and my 8GB card has 7GB available space.
Free space has an EXT window, but no values are given, and reads as follows:

    Available space _ _
    used space _ _
    remaining space _ _

I then opened Gparted, this showed both cards had the correct 1GB EXT3 partition.
I then used Gparted to partition both cards again, my phone showed the same results (not seeing the partition)

Last night,I flashed the dark tremor zip, downloaded A2SDGUI, but when i tried to open A2SDGUI the error:

either your phone is not rooted.
    The partition is missing or
    The script is missing....

because I don't see the partition with the three apps i mentioned earlier... i'm guessing thats my problem.
    any ideas??

Clipse of doom: you do a wipe/factory reset, wipe partition cache and dalvek cache.... but because it loads to the 1GBEXT3 you don't have to back up??
    thats cool.

I flashed the dark tremor 2.7.5.3-beta 4, then tried CMW recovery again to partition 1GBext, recovery tells me its all done, but no change (I cant see the partition anywhere on the phone)

    However:
    I opened terminal emulator

    typed>
    su (superuser was granted)
a2sd reinstall (an error saying: a2sd not found)

Ill get it right one day.

So... you flashed the script (DarkTremmor)...
Used ClockworkMod (updated version, I believe) to partition the SD card... 1 GB EXT and 0 swap...

Install FreeSpace from the Market, God damn it ! ! ! THERE you see the... free spaces and stuff ^^

    Terminal Emulator commands :

You gotta type "su" every time you open Terminal; otherwise go to "Preferences" and ad the "su" under the "Initial command" (last option in the "Preferences" menu) -- insert an empty line and type su there, so it gets inserted automatically when the application is opened.

a2sd reinstall -- phone reboots once it's done

a2sd zipalign -- reboot manually now (this alligns... every app... or idk...)

a2sd cachesd -- phone reboots once it's done (this moves the Dalvik to the EXT)

a2sd cachesdreset -- phone reboots once it's done (this deletes the Dalvik, you could do it alternatively from ClockworkMod, but if it's available in Terminal, easier this way).

    pm getInstallLocation -- check if it's 1.
    Otherwise : pm setInstallLocation 1 (0 == automatically, 1 = internal, 2 = external)
When a2sd is present, 1 (= internal) means the SD-EXT in fact, and 2 means the FAT32 partition of the card (you don't want that). So... set it to 1

    Then reboot the phone again.

Now go to the Market and install A2SDGUI. Open it. Check that Zipalign is on boot, dalvik is on SD-EXT, apps are on SD-EXT etc. You can also check the spaces in there, but it takes a little while to get the readings from the system. That's why I suggest FreeSpace from Market, it shows you every partition on your card/phone. JUST GET IT ALREADY !

    ---

Anyway, why the hell do you even need A2SD on the Desire HD? Don't you have 1.5 GB of internal memory?! My girlfriend's Desire S got around 1 GB and she's fine with that. My SD-EXT is 1 GB too and I'm fine with that too (even though I installed like 60 apps, games etc.). Why would you need more than the >1 GB that your phone already has?

    Yes...
I flashed the dark tremor zip... installed ok.
I have the latest version of clockworkmod and the latest recovery installed.
I used recovery to partition a 1GB EXT, set the swap at 0mb, recovery message "done" appears. a sucessfull partition.

I have installed FreeSpace from the market but when I open it there are no values to show I have a EXT partition, (screen shot follows)

I will follow your last guide again.

Its not about needing it, Its about wanting to know how to do it.
    Thanks for your help.

    oh...
terminal emulator I only opened once.
I typed su and super user permission was granted.
I then typed a2sd reinstall but the phone did not reboot, a line of text came up:

    a2sd: not found

I have also used Gparted to check the SDcard and Gparted shows 2 partititions:

    1: 1GBEXT3 partition
    2: FAT32 partition

If Terminal returns that "not found" it means that the DarkTremmor did not install well :\

    Flash this script : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=926005

Wipe cache partition and Wipe Dalvik cache before flashing. Do it twice (the wiping thing). Then reboot recovery and flash DarkTremmor.

Am I supposed to do a new install of the Miui rom first?
I've just wiped the cache partition + dalvek cache (twice as instructed) >install tremor zip... I did NOT wipe/factory reset>flash miui

No error on the tremor zip, installed ok.

But I did notice a message after the dalvek cache wipe:

    E:unknown volume for path[/sd-ext]

Well im about to give up, thank you all for trying to help.

But I still don't get why you need A2SD.

    LOL

Your right... I don't need it,
Most of us don't need to flash new roms... but you read about it, It sounds cool and in the end you just have to give it a go.
I'm trying it because I enjoy getting it done...... Just not this time lol

LoL. You know how many times I tried to get it to work on my Desire last time I had MIUI? That's a reason why I always switched back to Cyanogen -- Simple 2 Ext ROCKS !

I'm on LeeDrOiD right now, though, until the next Cyanogen comes up or a STABLE MIUI...

Well I haven't tried to install ext on a different rom.
I'll flash the one your using, and try to get ext to work.
Last try before I give up.

There's LeeDrOiD 3.3.3 for Desire HD as well. But it's got a build-in A2SD. Not sure how it is for the HD ! ! !

But for crying out loud, YOU DON'T NEED A2SD lol

I know I know........ but once you srat, you just gotta get it done.

Anyway.... I have flashed CyanogenMod Nightly, and installed FreeSpace.........
I can now see my ext3 partition!!!! (party party) This could possibly mean the US version of MIUI doesn't support the EXT3 function.
I have seen on the Australian MIUI site, that they tweak the MIUI rom and prefer you create an EXT3 partition and use the a2sd function.
I haven't tried to install dark tremor (i'm at work) but I will do when I get home.
Well I'm a step further than I was last night...... so i'm all set to spend another week on it LOL.
