[REQUEST] Volume Button as Camera Function

This is a request to perhaps have the volume rocker be used as the camera button to take pictures.

I think it will give the OS an intuitive function to our phones.

Thanks for reading and anyone that can actually do this.

That would be nice. In the mean time, CM camera can do this.

@fuquan25, I was thinking the same thing. I was able to find a download for the CyanogenMod camera apk, but it does not have this function implemented in the app itself. So now I am wondering if there is a modification that can be downloaded from CM7 in order to get this to work? Or perhaps, have a developer on our site create a mod to do this with the native MIUI camera apk?

There is a way to do this even with the miui camera but do make note that it WILL disable your volume control. So if you're willing to lose that I will show you how.

You will need Root Explorer (or an app like it) and some sort of text editor (drop box has one as do many other apps).

    ****NOTE****
I'm writing this as being explained for an Evo 4G. Anything that says "supersonic" will most likely be replaced with the name of your phone.

*-Steps 4 and 6 say to find "key 114" and "key 115". This might be different on your phone.

[B]If something should go wrong you take responsibilty[B]

    [B] Step 1. [B]
Using root explorer navigate to system/usr/keylayout.

    Step 2.
    Back up "qwerty.kl" & "supersonic-keypad.kl"in a safe place.

    Step 3.
Highlight and hold on "qwerty.kl" until the options pop up then select "Open in Text Editor"

    Step 4.*
Scroll down to "key 115" and change "VOLUME_UP" to "CAMERA" and "WAKE" to "WAKE_DROPPED" & Then go to "key 114" and change "VOLUME_DOWN" to "CAMERA" and "WAKE" to "WAKE_DROPPED"

***MAKE SURE THE "C" LINES UP WITH THE FIRST LETTER OF THE OTHER BUTTONS AND "WAKE" ALSO LINES UP WITH THE OTHER "WAKE"***

    Then "Save & Exit"

    Step 5.
Highlight and hold on "supersonic-keypad.kl" untill the options pop up then select "Open in Text Editor"

    Step 6.*
Scroll down to both "key 115" and change Both "VOLUME_UP" to "CAMERA" and "WAKE" to "WAKE_DROPPED" & Then go to BOTH "key 114" and change BOTH "VOLUME_DOWN" to "CAMERA" and "WAKE" to "WAKE_DROPPED"

    Then "Save & Exit"

    Step 7.

Reboot Phone then go to your camera, and use the Volume up or down to snap a picture.

Or you can install ButtonRemapper and remap any key on your phone easily. The volume down on my N1 is mapped to be the media key, so I can use the MIUI media key option. Also mapped the Search soft key as the camera button.

    Check the app out

Don't forget to install the keyTracker app first. That app will tell you what each buttons numerical equivalent is

Re: [REQUEST] Volume Button as Camera Function

I'm so glad I stumbled upon this thread. My one and only complaint with MIUI has always been the camera picture quality. It was so bad I stopped taking photos with my phone. I never knew I could take the camera app from another ROM and install it. Now I have the camera from the Evervolv ROM I used to use installed in MIUI and I can start taking pictures again with my phone. Thanks all....
