    Performance Issues?

    Hey all,

So yesterday I finally decided to get ICS on my phone and came across this ROM. Phone was already rooted (Revolutionary?) so was pretty easy. So far the only issue I seem to have is that my apps seem to be having performance issues. They take longer to load (Which as I activated a2sd I expected) and they seem to freeze while they're running.

I used a2sd and answered yes to all the questions and I suspect this is what is causing my trouble. When I partitioned my drive I also selected a nice big cache size which I'm hearing I shouldn't have done? It's not too far in that I can't repartition but I'm looking for advice on what I should do at this point. Just repartition and don't use a cache size and don't let it put everything on the SD?

    Re: Performance Issues?

Have you used a2sd on other ROMs with different results, using the same SD card? I'm asking because the speed and quality of the card can greatly affect performance. I saw a night-and-day difference when I upgraded my card to higher capacity, higher speed model.

Also, have you tried the apps loading directly from the phone memory to see if they work any better? That's just to eliminate the possibility that it's a bad ROM install, and not the fault of a2sd or the card.

No. I am completely new to a2sd. Had not heard of it before yesterday and the only ROM I used was I think Revolutionary? This SD card is new. My old one crapped out on me. According to this test program I found it's a class 10. Its scandisk 16 GB Ultra. If a better card will stop this I'll run into Best Buy today (Hot though it is sheesh 104? Really?).

Right now it's the worst in Scramble with Friends. It'll lock up but the timer keeps on going and my phone is just unresponsive for a few seconds.

Ran a2sd nocachesd and that seems to have helped a little. Still getting freezes but for not as long.

Mine used to do it with hanging with friends. Can't remember what finally fixed it, as I was playing with the ROM heavily at the time. But I would start with a wipe (cache and dalvik)...then maybe try a diff ext (i use ext4) btw I have the cache for all my apps on ext too, except I used link2sd (it gives more control for individual apps)

I may take a look at link2sd. It did improve slightly but still getting freezes which in a timed game like Scramble is unacceptable. More control would be good. May just be that certain apps should be run off internal storage.

    Re: Performance Issues?

Ok I installed link2sd. Didn't even know it was an app. I am confused a bit. After I ran the scripts for a2sd it appears to be working. I'd partitioned using an ext4 partition. Viewing the contents seemed to be a challenge though but I do see that the amount allocated for it IS occupying space on the phone. I assume that everything is being installed there. Now when I ran link2sd I was viewing the apps. I went to Scramble because I figured I would move that to internal storage rather than the SD but when I click on it I have the option to Move to SD only. What will that do? Will that move it to internal storage + SD? And then if it gives me the option to move it to phone it'll go to internal storage? I may try that and just see what happens.

Move to sd will do just that.
create link will move whatever else you choose to sd (libs, cache, whatev)
all my apps and moved and linked, and all work without issues.

    Re: Performance Issues?

Hmm I am still getting pauses in Scramble so I thought maybe I'd try to just put it on the internal storage. Can't seem to figure a way to do that. Using Link2sd it just goes back and forth between my SD and the ext4 partition. Tried doing an a2sd remove and then doing it but still same. Any ideas?

Link2sd> multi-select> remove link + move to phone

    Re: Performance Issues?

I ended up re-doing everything. Re-partitioning, wiping, reflashing and this time I never installed a2sd. So right now all my apps are on internal storage. With this ROM I seem to have more internal storage space free so I'm guessing it takes up less space than the previous one but it won't be long until I use it up and then I plan to use link2sd to move certain things on over.

Scramble is performing way better now and hasn't froze during a game as of yet so I'm thinking it was a2sd or perhaps how I was using it? Or maybe Scramble just doesn't run well that way. In other apps there was a performance hit starting up apps. I didn't do any type of testing of other games to see if they too exhibited the same but it looks like a2sd for right now is a no no and link2sd is the way to go since I can then put only those apps that do well over to the SD when I start needing the space again.

    Thanks much!
