I was actually helping somebody a few weeks ago with a power button that broke. Unfortunately, I think this issue is going to become more common w/ the D1 as they age
People say that if you play Microsoft CD's backwards, you hear satanic things, but that's nothing, because if you play them forwards, they install Windows.
If at first you don't succeed, paint it shiny white and put an Apple logo on it. You can make a fortune on upgrades.

Maybe its a build up of sweat or oils from ur finger. I don't recommended u do this but u can if u want. Go out and buy one of those keyboard dusters. U no the one in the can? Maybe if u get one of those u can spray the power button in the little spaces of it and maybe some of that gunk that's built up in the will come off....that's just a suggestion. Maybe it will help

Thanks yeah it is most likely just cause the age of the phone.
Just like how the "gold" on the camera button rubbed off ages ago.
i was using a needle and i was able to get some gunk out from the sides of the button but i do believe its kaput and will not get the "click" anymore
But I do get a slight click on the left side of the button but thats it.
Thanks friends i appreciate the input.

Plugging in the charger boots the phone.
Opening the keyboard wakes it up.
Not as convenient, but the Good Old Droid is usable.

I started using "button remapper" from the market. Works great

Yeah button remapper is the way to go. 211 and 212 I think is what i used. Change focus and camera to power, and change the setting to wake dropped. My volume is shot now too. As I never use the slide out keyboard I changed left and right alt to my volume shortcuts, and the search button to camera. It's a pain, but at least with android we can fix this stuff. There is also a way to do it manually if you don't want to pay for remapper. It's in /system/usr/keylayout/

Well my first Droid was the release model and it soon got messed up. The keyboard stopped sliding out, and everything was all scratching off like the gold on the camera button and the soft touch all around the phone. But my replacement, which I'm guessing is a newer model, has held up fantastically. The only problem is that I didn't get a new battery cover with the replacement so my battery door is all scratched.

I had the same happen to my droid. Dropped it and my power button had no response. I was able to fix it though. Unfortunately, cleaning out debris didn't work in my case. So I had to take my droid apart. It is a lot of work and risk.
I will refer you to the following link, which helped me greatly (along with the teardown video):
https://supportforums.motorola.com/message/324682
Teardown video:
http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Motorola-Droid-Teardown/1436/1
There is no "spring" in the device, but there are tiny metal circles that I call "spring steel" that are slightly beveled and sit under the plastic buttons on the inner frame of the device (under the case). In most cases, these tiny steel pieces fall off or get loose because they only seem to be held on with tape.
We all know how hot our droids can run on certain ROMs, also debris and oils can contribute to the slippage if the tape and/or steel piece. When you press the plastic button, a bump on the bottom of the button makes contact and depresses the spring steel which completes the circuit.
To fix your droid (instead of relying on software) you may have to take it apart. I used a couple different apps to help avoid having to tear it apart, but one day I was out and I had to switch my battery for my backup battery and realized I didn't have my charger to "jumpstart" my phone once the battery had been replaced... It sucked.
Also, make sure that after tearing into the device, you carefully search the device for the spring steel if you couldn't locate it under the power button. If you can't find it at all, rip apart a cheap calculator, or old dumbphone because their buttons typically rely on the spring steel pieces as well. Hope this helps!
Best of luck.
Of course, I am not responsible for any damage you may cause by teardown, etc

It gets worse.
This happened to me and about a week later the button completely stopped working. I had to slide the phone open to wake it . Recovery isn't to fun either. The back space key works like the power button.

Yeah it actually broke while i held it in my hands. One second it was fine.. the next it was kaput. I got used to it though. Changes in humidity seem to help.
